Frequently Asked
Questions

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development. Diagnosis is made by a qualified mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, using criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The assessment typically involves clinical interviews, behavioral observations, questionnaires, and gathering information from multiple sources like parents, teachers, or close associates to ensure symptoms are present in more than one setting.
In children, common symptoms include:
  • Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play
  • Forgetfulness in daily activities
  • Fidgeting or squirming in seats
  • Excessive talking or blurting out answers
  • Difficulty waiting for their turn
  • Interrupting or intruding on others
In adults, symptoms may manifest as:
  • Challenges with organization and time management
  • Frequent procrastination or failure to finish tasks
  • Restlessness or feeling constantly on the go
  • Impulsive decisions or actions
  • Difficulty maintaining focus during meetings or reading
  • Forgetfulness and misplacing items regularly
ADHD can impact various aspects of daily life, including academic and work performance due to difficulties with concentration, organization, and completing tasks. In relationships, impulsivity and inattentiveness may lead to misunderstandings or conflicts with family, friends, and colleagues. Individuals might struggle with time management, leading to missed appointments or deadlines, which can cause additional stress and affect self-esteem. Effective management strategies and support can help mitigate these challenges.
ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder, is an outdated term previously used to describe individuals who primarily have inattentive symptoms without hyperactivity. The current terminology under the DSM-5 is ADHD, which encompasses different presentations:
  • Predominantly Inattentive Presentation (formerly ADD)
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation
  • Combined Presentation
Therefore, ADD is now considered one of the presentations of ADHD rather than a separate condition.
Yes, ADHD is categorized into three main presentations:
  • Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Significant symptoms of inattention but fewer symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity.
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Significant hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms but fewer inattentive symptoms.
  • Combined Presentation: Equal levels of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
    • These presentations help clinicians tailor treatment and management strategies to the individual’s specific symptom profile.
